P-FLAG Cleveland celebrates 20 years
by Jane Daroff
Cleveland-The city's chapter of Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays was started 20 years ago by Jane Daroff and Jes Sellers at the insistence of Jane's son Rob. They were traveling to the Akron group and Rob thought parents should not have to travel that far for support.
Rob got Trinity Cathedral to give the group space rent-free and they have been meeting there ever since. Several thousand people have come their way. Not just parents and friends but also LGBT children of all ages seeking understanding, acceptance, support and often help in how to come out to their families.
P-FLAG Cleveland was honored on May 20 at the People of All Colors TogetherCleveland 25th anniversary celebration opening reception for their two decades of work reaching out to people, letting them know that they are not alone, that they are loved and have a home.
Dr. Sellers is the director of the counseling service at Case and Ms. Daroff is a clinical social worker who also works in this service.
P-FLAG's 20th anniversary event will be held on Sunday, July 10 from 1-4 pm at the home of Ernie Cahoon, 2691 Derbyshire in Cleveland Heights. The organizers would love to have all past members attend.
RSVP is essential. Please leave a message on the P-FLAG line at 216-556-4317.
Jane Daroff is the co-founder of P-FLAG Cleveland.
